The Scientific Method
The scientific method is an empirical method of acquiring knowledge that has characterized the development of science since at least the 17th century.
It involves careful observation, applying rigorous skepticism about what is observed, given that cognitive assumptions can distort how one interprets the observation.
It involves formulating hypotheses, via induction, based on such observations; experimental and measurement-based testing of deductions drawn from the hypotheses; and refinement (or elimination) of the hypotheses based on the experimental findings.
These are principles of the scientific method, as distinguished from a definitive series of steps applicable to all scientific enterprises.

The scientific Method
In TPS, Continuous Improvement is endless and aims at engaging everyone in an process they can follow to improve the work around them. This is therefore a simple but very specific process that allows the engagement of all.
The framework can be seen as a process of trial and error supported by scientific thinking, that focuses on
- observation of the actual problem or opportunity
- formulating hypothesis for root causes and solutions
- testing assumptions trough experimentation or piloting
- drawing conclusions of facts coming from the designed experiment
- acting upon those results by creating, implementing and sustaining new processes and standards
This is what we have learnt to call the PDCA cycle, applicable to all situations in incrementally changing operations for the better.
